Croatia becomes the 28th member of the European Union.

The accession of Croatia on Monday 1st July 2013 is an important step in the integration of the ‘smaller states’ of Europe to the EU. Croatia is also the first enlargement since 2007 and may possible be the last for a while? With an unemployment rate of 21% and many young Croatian disillusioned and a divided union mired with a debt crisis that has plagued Greece, Italy, and Spain, do Croatians really pose to benefit from the union?
Nevertheless, thousands of Croatians celebrated in Zagreb with fireworks and the beautiful sounds of Beethovens ‘Ode of Joy’ playing at midnight.
